- Shops were not half as plentiful in olden times as they are now. People had to go to the nearest town to make purchases.
Buying and selling were not carried on after Mass.
Money was not always given for goods labor was often given instead.
The words "Bout, "Tick" and "Change" were used in buying selling.
Bout was swopping and giving a money extra. Tick was giving goods on credit.
Change was swopping.
The only day considered unlucy to transact business is the day of the week in which the 28th Dec. falls.
The markets held district were in Mount Bellew, Kilkerrin and Newbridge. A market is held in Mount Bellew every Tuesday.
About thirty years ago a pedlar named Martin Lyons visited this district often gathering rags, horse-hair and feathers. Some still come.
The various coins are a penny, three pence, six pence, a shilling. florin and half crown.
