    10. James Hope the famous rebel of 1798 worked as a weaver for some time in Balbriggan a mile from Balrothery. The only memorial of him is a cottage named "Hope Cottage", by an admirer of his.
    11 The carriage which conveyed James Stephens the Finian leader passed through Balrothery on the way to Barnegeera Strand half was between Balbriggan and Skerries where he made his escape to France. A stone on the sea over which he crossed to the small boat which conveyed him to the hooker of Patrick de Lacy Gartin, bore the inscription "1866". During the Black and Tan war this stone was removed and smashed.
