Crocodile tears were shed in plenty and the whole countryside sympathised with the "stricken" relatives who played their part excellently in the great camouflage.
Herrity who, needless to say, was still very much alive, had little difficulty with the help of willing friends to make good his escape to America and their rejoined his two friends. The authorities had been outwitted and fooled. They admitted that Providence deemed that the murderers should never be apprehended. With the elapse of time the authorities withdrew their proclamation of the £1,000 reward and so the curtain was rung down on the greatest drama that ever happened in the land of the O'Donnell's, a drama the memory of which will live on and be told around the firesides of the homes along the shores of the Mulroy for centuries to come.
The spot where the murder took place is about half a mile from the school. It is said that not a blade of grass ever grew on the spot where his head fell.
The murder of Lord Leithrim, although cruel, aroused little sympathy for him because his tyranny and sinful life made (him) hated and dreaded.
