- On St. Brigid's Eve the Irish people in many districts make crosses of rushes.
On that night they have for supper "poundies" and after supper the eldest member of the family goes out and gathers some rushes. When he returns he knocks at the door and says "Fosgail an dora agus leig isteach Brighid" three times. The rushes are made into crosses and on Candlemas Day holy water is sprinkled on them. They are then hung in every room in the house. They are also hung up in the out offices.
