    Far different was its aspect
    One hundred tears ago,
When clan met clan in combat
    And blood did freely flow.
    3
    Then was the Port notorious
    (Our grandfathers have told),
    And at its Fair uproarious
    Were cattle bought and sold.
    4
The day before the Fair day
    The turmoil did begin,
    With pipers, pedlars, gamblers
    And tinkers with their tin.
    5
    Then tinker fought with tinker
Their wives joined in the fray,
And all the while the bag-pipes
    Resounded o'er the bay.
    6
    Like tigers fought the tinkers
    Like tigresses their wives,
    And yet MIRABILE DICTU!
There was no loss of life.
