A highwayman named Crotty lived on the Comeragh Mountains long ago. He was arrested by the soldiers at Ballinafin in the parish of Rathgormack where he slept. During his sleep his firearms were wet with water by the maid in the house. When he tried to shoot at the enemy his firearms refused to work. He was then taken prisoner.
Crotty was taken to Waterford jail and his sentence of death was passed on him.
At his trial he asked if any man was there from the County Waterford and he got no reply. He then said there was a 'boot' of gold hidden on a part of the mountain under a large rock with the print of a horseshoe on it. This rock is said to be ten spade-lengths from Lake Comsingaun and it is so big that a pair of horses and a plough could turn upon it. The story is told that this gold was found by a man from Curraheen.
