- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)evening. After dinner a dance is held in the barn. Straw boys or gammers as they are called dress up and come to join the dancing. They call for the bride and bridegroom and chair them up to the roof. They sometimes come in blowing porter bottles, and eventually burst the bottoms out of the bottles. This is taken as a symbol that they must get drink, usually they get a mug of porter each.
Fifty years ago the bride rode behind the bridegroom on horseback, and up to 25 years ago they raced on side-cars at the weddings. The best horses in the district were well prepared for a coming wedding and driven as hard as they could gallop. Wagers were laid as to what horse would keep the road. Should the harness break during any of their break neck drives it was considered an unlucky omen for the future of the bridal pair.
