  1. Long ago the young people at wakes played some games not through any disrespect to the dead person but to pass the time pleasantly for themselves. The chief one played amongst these games was one called "Thart le Bróg". The boys present at the wake will make a mallet out of hay and them about fifteen or sixteen young men will sit in a circle on the floor. Next they will cover their legs with hay. Now one person has to stand (has to stand) in the centre of the ring and try and catch the mallet as it is passed round. The person who stands in the centre of the ring and if he fails in catching the mallet he gets a blow of the mallet on the back.
