- Long ago there was a fairy fort supposed to be in every district. There is supposed to be one in Liss na Gross, another in Lis Meagon one in Liscesker there is also one in Ballina Costello. There are called lisses and forts. They are not in view of one another. They are two or three miles away. Some of them are not so far apart. The townlands where the forts are begin with the word "Liss" on account of forts or lisses being in the village.Most of them are circular in shape and rarely you would find them any different. There is a fence of earth and stone round each one, and there was some trees outside that. It is said in old stories that people went down through the rooms which were supposed to be there. It was also said that children who did not live to be baptised were thrown into these forts. Some people would say that fairies built these forts and others would say that it was the Danes that built them when they came to Ireland. People said that a lot of cats used to come and visit these forts. The owners of land in which forts are built never interfere with them, for one reason(continues on next page)
