  1. New Year's Eve Custom. When the clock strikes twelve on New Year's Night the boats that are in the harbour sound their horns. People on the streets beat tin cans. The local band marches through the town playing Old Irish Airs. The Cathedral Bells are played by the organist. They send out the old year and they welcome the New Year in. On this same night the old people in some houses in the town beat a piece of bread against the door to keep the hunger out for the coming year as they say.

    It is a custom for many years in Cobh to held a Regatta on the 15th. of August. It is a great day in Cobh. The Regatta is held in the harbour. The boat races begin at three o'clock. There is a bag-race at four o'clock. After that there are balloon races. These races are great fun and the children enjoy them very much. Sixpence is paid for a ticket to send a balloon. A label is tied on to the balloon and the name and address of the person written on it. The balloon that goes the farthest away wins the prize. Whoever finds the balloon sends it back to the
