- Candles are not made in this district at the present day but they were made in former times.
In former times people made candles in their own houses. They made the candles out of peeled rushes dipped in fat which was melted in a grisset.
Resin candles were also made, the resin was obtained from palm or deal trees.
Tallow candles were made out of peeled rushes dipped in fat which was melted, the candles were then left to dry.
In olden times soap was (was) scarce in this district, people sometimes used oatenmeal instead to wash their hands and faces.
When the old people wanted to wash their clothes they put them in baskets or buckets and carried them to the nearest river or stream and washed them there.
