  1. 66. Superstitions in Lurgan Parish. (Ctd)
    The following are lucky.
    1. To find a horse - shoe.
    2. A black cat crossing the path in front of the pedestrian.
    3. To meet a chimney-sweep.
    4. To see a load of new-mown hay.
    5. To have crickets in the house.
    6. To put on any article of wearing apparel wrong side out.
    7. To see two magpies together.
    8. To tie red tags to tails of animals (in this way evil spirits were kept away)
    9. For a person to die on Xmas Day, Xmas Eve or St Stephen's Day. (Many Roman Catholics believe that the gates of heaven are open for any person for three days at Xmas and any person dying then, irrespective of creed, will get into heaven. Mrs.J.Browne Aughaloughan, a Protestant, died on Xmas Day 1923 and a neighbour, Mrs. N. Bree told the dead woman's sister that her soul was in heaven because she died on that day.
