- There was a hedge school in Cormaddyduff in the year 1800. The master and pupils would be inside in a barn in Winter and in Summer they used to be going out along the ditches. The master was paid by the pupils who would bring one penny per week. Master Donnelly was the teacher. All the subjects were taught in Irish, Writing was done with pointed sticks and quills and they would make the ink out of soot. There was no black-board the master would give out everything from his book. The master would stay for a month in every district and some times three months if they were not disturbed,
