  1. In the stirring period of 48 there sprung up in the neighbourhood of Mollough, which is in the Townsland of Mollough, near the village of Ballyneal, a great Fenian leader in the person of John O'Mahony. He was known in later years as the founder of the Fenian Movement. He was much sought for by the British Government of the day for which reason he made a hiding place in his own land at Ballyquirkeen. It is still in existence and it is known as Mahony's Cave but it is now a den for the badger and fox.
