Fetherstonaugh
Our parents say how the people suffered under the tyranny of the landlords during the last generation. On the estate of the family called Fetherston of this locality thirteen families were evicted on a May morning. The evicted families had to try to erect huts on the hedges of the bogs or on some waste piece of ground. Many of those miserable homesteads are still to be seen. These same Fetherston cut a road through the churchyard and round the monastery at Clonfad. The priest who tried to prevent him from cutting the road said that he would not have enough of land to be buried. these words came true because when he died his coffin had to be put down sideways. At one period there was a bad agent on this estate who used to haugh the legs of the cattle, that is to cut the sinews down the back of the legs and so leave them powerless to move. Then he would go to Fetherston and accuse anyone he wanted to have removed from the place. The accused person would be hanged or transported. Fetherston got suspicious and determined to find out the truth about the matter so went out and haughed his own cattle. The agent reported it to Fetherston and accused some party he wanted to injure and even swore against them. In this way Fetherston found out the truth and so got the name of Fetherstonhaugh.- Bailitheoir
