- There are many forges in Co. Meath. Most of them are situated near a river or cross-road.
They have mostly felt roofs on them.
The door is generally made in the shape of a shoe.
The smiths shoe horses and donkeys now-a-days. Long ago the smiths had to shoe cattle, as every farmer did his farm-work with cattle instead of horses.
Occassionally they used cows. This is the way the smith shod the cattle. He made the shoe in two parts and nailed it on to each hoof.
A set of shoes would last the cattle for about two months.
The forge water is good for a wind-broken horse.
The forge was always looked upon, and is still, as a great place for story-telling.
