- Long ago bread was made from oats wheat and potatoes. It was grown locally. People remember quirns and in each family they had quirns of their own. The kind of bread made long ago was oat bread and boxty and potato bread. What was used in oat bread was new milk and salt. What was used in boxty was was some boiled potatoes and raw ones mixed together. What was used in potato cake was boiled potatoes.
Bread was baked one day that would supply for a week. There were no marks on the top of the cakes.
Boxty was baked on a griddle and potato bread also. Oaten bread was baked standing in front of the fire.
