- Rinn na Spáinneach - Spanish Point.
Long ago in the year 1588 there was a great tragedy on this shore. It was in the time of Queen Bess, and the King of Spain sent a big fleet of war ships to conquer England. They were scattered by the English fleet, and one of them was making her way home by the west of Ireland when she was wrecked about 1 1/2 miles south-west of Milltown Malbay.
"And right on that spot in the brave days of yore. The Alonza De Leva was wrecked on that shore."
About 600 Spaniards were drowned and the poor fellows who reached the shore were cruelly put to death by the Sheriff, Boetins Mac Clancy, through fear of Elizabeth.Since then the place is known as Rinn na Spáineach, or Spanish Point.
