- (continued from previous page)One of the monks had his place of hiding, and used to pray for days at an old stone in Newhall graveyard. Now the remains of any person buried in Newhall are always rested on the stone where the monk knelt in prayer for days.In the Penal times Masses were said on the hill side, and also on rocks and in valleys. The schools were in hay barns and there were no seats only a seat on a rock in these schools were the famous Hedge schoolmasters taught.
No Catholic could sit in Parliament nor be a lawyer, a doctor or a soldier or a school teacher. Either they should educated as Protestants or they should grow up ingnorant. All Bishops and monks were banished and Masses could not be said except in lonely places in valleys and glens. But in spite of danger, the priests continued to risk their lives, among people ministering the Sacraments on the hill-sides and in the secret glens.
