- Long ago there was a chapel in Chapel lane and the reason this chapel was built there was because the Protestants took the Abbey from the Franciscans and they built a Chapel there in that lane and that is how it was called Chapel lane. Salthouse lane got its name because there was a store for salt for country there.
There are many lanes in the district of Ennis. Some of these lanes are named after something and for some particular reason. The lanes in the district are Brewery lane, Brady's lane, Lysaght's lane, Salt-house lane, Nailer's lane, Vinegar lane, and last, Chapel lane, which was the most important of them all.
Brewery lane got its name in this way. There was a Mrs Hartney who ran a brewery business in the lane. She made porter and other spirits. When she died the lane was called after her business which was brewing. There was also a business carried on in whiskey, which was called distilling.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
