A butcher's shop was opened in the village a year ago.
There was already a similar shop at the other end of the village owned by two brothers named "Downes". The following lines were written by John Ryan, local poet, in reference to this matter."The Manns came down to down the Downes.
But I'm sure they'll come to grief.
Nine pence the pound is rather salty for fresh beef:
Patrickswell had decoratons,
These hide it's villainers,
For in its prices are quotations.
Higher than Pallaskenry (Native village of Downes).
The Mann's may think because they're funny,
That we'll buy their fancy meat.
And hand them out our scanty money,
At a preferential rate.
At this time with prices falling,
And for cattle there's no buyer,
Nine pence a pound is a price appalling,
For their pound of motor tyre.
If they want to down the Downes,
Let themselves partake some loss,
Let no tariff waltz around us;
