  1. This was a wicked looking old man who begged around from place to place. He was dreaded by the shool boys who frequently took the fields should they happen to spy his burly figure approaching. Very often this alteration of their course made matters worse, as he used mount the fences and pretend he was on their pursuit. Scholars occasionally missed school on that account. There was one feature noticeable about him if the youngsters walked boldly towards him and were respectful he never minded them. He looked formidable being a big man with a touch of humour in his eye, and a face that looked as if it had not touched for quite a while. He always carried a long stout stick which he used tap against the ground by way of demonstrating what he would do to naughty boys.
    I never saw him wearing boots and his feet were certainly like a tanned hide. Mick always had a preference for
