  1. I heard where a local race horse owner was on a visit to Fort Elizabeth one night. One of the grooms drove a pony and trap to bring his master home. When the boy arrived at the big gate leading to Fort Elizabeth House the gate was opened and shut by a stranger as the pony and trap passed through. Whether intentionally or not the gentleman did not return with his groom that night. The boy met the same party this most obliging stranger, who again opened the gate and closed it when the car passed through on the return journey.
