- During the Penal laws when children were forbidden to attend Catholic schools, the Hedge schools were established, and these existed up to 1831 when National Education System was established.There were a couple of the Hedge schools in this district. One was situated in Skehanagh a little to the South of Mr Madden's cottage and all the farmer's sons at that time attended it.The teacher at this district was Mr Standy Burke and the subjects he taught were, Reading, Writing, Spelling, and Arithmetic. When teachihng "the rule of three" he explained it, but the following words."State it as it lies".Pupils brought 2 sods of turf each, every day and a stone from the fence acted as a seat.Another school was situated at Kilpeacon cross-roads in the(continues on next page)
