   (Under this heading I include a Miscellany of items which probably are local only in the fact that they are told here. Any that have been given me as connected with the local area will be put under the reference No. 16 as heretofore).

   St. Patrick was once travelling in the Co. Limerick. He had an ass to carry him about. One evening he came to the house of a priest who was quite willing to accomodate the Saint for the night but refused point blank to provide for the ass, saying that whatever little grass he had was sorely wanted for his own cow. The Saint on getting this definite refusal, made no murmur but said in a gentle voice that anywhere the ass would set his hoof nine blades of grass would grow for the one which had grown there before. On hearing this, the priest acceded to the Saint's wish that his donkey should be "kept" for the night. Now as soon as the saint had retired for the night, the priest sent his boy out, with instructions that he should keep the saint's ass on the move all night long. This he did and in the morning when the Saint Patrick called for his ass, he observed how footsore and weary the poor beast was. He at once divined what had occurred and turning to the priest he said "Covetous you are and covetous will be your tribe till the end of time."
