should give ten to the Landlord. Those tithes were collected by Bailiffs. There is a story told (of) as to how Lord Midleton got the valuable property of Midleton Cahermore and Ballyannon.
An antecedent of the present Viscount Midleton whose name was Broider or Broderick was one day riding to Carrigthowill on a very good horse, when he met a weary looking soldier of Cromwell riding an equally tired horse. On inquiring the whereabouts of Midleton and Ballyannon he was told by the cunning Broider that it was about forty miles distant and mainly consisted of bog and mountain. After some arguement the soldier consented to give him the title deeds of Midleton and Ballyannon in exchange for the horse he rode. The soldier turned back to Cork and the Brodericks have the property still.
