The castle stands on a little eminence about one hundred and fifty yards from the north side, on left bank of the river Womanagh which flows in an easterly direction into Youghal harbour, The castle is of the usual square type of castle architecture or more strictly speaking it is an oblong, as it measures about forty four feet north and south by about thirty two feet east and west, The walls are of massive proportions, being about seven feet in thickness and built of limestone, which is found on the spot, the coignes are of chiselled and dressed stones, great care appears to being taken in the erection of the edifice, as after standing for several centuries exposed to the heat of summer and the frost of winter - to the violent storms, and terrific rains of many and many generations - that it seems still in an excellent state of preservation, almost as perfect as when first built, In the northern side of the castle, near the north-western coigne, is a gothic doorway of about the same dimensions, is about eight or ten feet inside the outer one, and opening into ground floor of the building, and between the two, on the left hand side is another doorway, from which ten stone steps accend to the north eastern angle of the building, and
