  1. Early in the eighteenth century the great Atlantic was crossed by the first steam ship named the "Sirius". It was under the supervision of Captain Roberts anative of Passage West. The "Sirius was apassenger ship built for the route between Fishguard and Cork. After it had travelled this route for a number of years under the command of Captain Roberts, it finally crossed the Atlantic. It departed amidst the waving of banners, flags and great cheering for the country beyond the Atlantic. This voyage was very successful and Captain Roberts and his crew were congratulated by all. The average speed was fifteen knots an hour. It took nearly three weeks for it to complete this daring voyage . After this Captain Roberts was transferred to another ship which was not very safe for such a voyage but he was bent on going but unfortunately he never returned. It is said that he arrived safely at New York but on his homeward journey he met his doom We are told that ship lies buried in mid-
