   In early Spring boys buy tops in the shops, especially the "giggler" as it is called, and go whipping them when the roads are dry with a piece of cord tied on to a stick. Sometimes they race, and if the spear of the top fell out in the race, they would get a coffin nail, and then plug the whole in the top with a match and put the coffin nail in the spear's place.
   In the Autumn, when the nuts, or galls as they are more commonly known, fall from the horse-chestnut tree, the boys gather them. They bore a hole in them with a nail, and then put a piece of cord through them. Some boys would have them gathered since the year before, and they would be harder, than those taken from the tree the following year, and would often break them too.
   In the Winter, boys have hop-frog to keep themselves warm. One stoops down, and the other jumps over him. Skating is also played in the Winter time. Boys throw water on the road at night, and when it freezes, the road gets slippery after the water. Next morning the boys go skating on it.
