- On the fourteenth of August 1876, a boy of eighteen years named James McAuliffe and other boys went bathing in the river Dalua at a place called the Stick Hole. The Stick Hole is situated about half a mile from Kanturk, and is a very deep portion of the river, and only good swimmers would swim there. McAuliffe's friends dived in, and being good swimmers they were able to protect themselves, but James got excited when he dived in and he was not able to keep himself floating, and he was drowned. Everything was done to rescue him but all proved fruitless.
