- Long ago the people of this country had an idea of the weather when they saw certain birds. When sea gulls are near the land it foretells bad weather. When the starlings come to out houses for shelter it is a sign of snow and very heavy frosts. When a robin sings on a briar a fine day it is a sign of rain. When the swallows are flying low it is a sign of rain.
When the seagulls are not on the land or near it it is a sign of good dry weather. When the swallows are flying high it is a sign of fine weather. When the "Tabhairín rúa" is around in the evening it is also a sign of fine weather. When we see the cuckoo's corncrakes and swallows, we know that we have summer.
