The spotter work was to see that everyone was doing right and honnest, and above all, that no customer would leave the shop with out making a purchase. When the assistant would fail in pleasing a customer, the spotter would take his place. If he pleased them perhaps the assistant would get the sack. One day an old lady came to the shop, the assistant tried every way to sell her some goods. He could not please her, he saw the spotter looking at him very angry. He knew that if the spotter pleased the lady that he would get the sack. He was thinking what would he do. He whispered to the old lady, and he told her, that the man that was walking up, and down the shop, that he is half mad. He told her if he says anything to her, to strike him with the umbrella or he would follow her down the town.
