- The Local LandlordMr Meredith was the name of the land in this district. He was looked upon as being a very cruel landlord. Evictions were very numerous during his reign as land - lord.My grandmother was a widow and she was paying forty three pounds rent for the land. There were two years rent due, and the bailliffs came and turned her and children out on the roadside. There was also another neighbour of hers evicted on the same day. The evicted people went to their friends. and aster sometime the sometimes succeeded in getting back to their own home. Those who did not get back emigrated to America.
