  2. There was a school in St. James’s Well about two hundred yards from St. James’s Well School, Riverstown, Co. Sligo. It was a small thatched school. Master Bruen and Mrs. Bridges who taught in it, they taught there for years. They had a little house beside the school. The children’s parents gave the teacher some money and potatoes and oats. The children used to write on slates, as they had no pens or pencils. The children used to sit on the ground. The subjects taught were English reading spelling, geography, History and Arithmetic. The children used to speak Irish but they used no Irish books.
