- In my district certain days of the year are celebrated according to the origin of the day. For instance on St. Stephen's Day the boys and sometimes grown-up men gather together and go in procession from house to house carrying decorated bushes and singing the Wren-song.The people wear the shamrock on St. Patrick's Day in memory of our patron saint who died on that day. During Shrove the people make pancakes and on Easter Sunday Easter eggs are eaten and greatly indulged in, especially by the children. On the Eve of May day may-flowers are placed over every door because it is said these keep the fairies away.In certain areas people place a large red candle in the front window of the house because they say that this candle may serve as a beacon to any traveller who may be passing the way.There is a legend that on Christmas night Santa Claus climbed to the roof of a poor person's house and dropped a purse of money down the chimney(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
