  1. Long ago there lived a queen, who was a cruel stepmother and very hard on her stepson Conn. She sent him out every morning to mind the cattle in the field and only gave him a cut of bread for the whole day and supper at night. She hoped that the boy would fade away and die in a short time, but instead of Conn fading away he began to get fat and big and this made the old woman very angry. She sent out her younger daughter with Conn to watch the cattle and to see where he got his dinner. When dinner-hour came Conn played a sweet tune on his whistle and his stepsister fell asleep.
