    his way for the first time. Being a complete stranger in the district he unbridled his horse at the witches door and moved to the fire to warm himself. He noticed that over the fire there hung a large pot and a most peculiar smell was coming from it, and to see what it contained he lifted off the cover and lo and behold what did it contain but the breast and head of a man. He dashed for the door mounted his horse put the spurs into the flesh of his mouth but as he did he perceived one of the witches hanging on to the tail of the horse. His terror knew no bounds and when he reached the Dúnbeg river he urged his horse forward and with one leap he went through the boiling foam and the witch was bemoaning her loss at the other side of the river, but on examining the horse he found him covered with blood as during the chase the witch
