Barracks and civilians from the town arrived and gave whatever assistance they could with engines and hoses. They failed to get the fire under control. When the flames got to the store where the whiskey was it burned like petrol. To try and save the building the whiskey was allowed to flow and it formed pools in the yard. The townsmen got on their knees and drank it out of these pools.
The burning continued for a week though everyone gave help. Thousands of tons of barley were burnt.
