- (continued from previous page)Lord Edward Fitzgerald, Kinsman of the late Lord Maurice Fitzgerald of Johnstown castle was one of the bravest leaders of the rebels in the rising of 1798. There is a story told about him and his companions going to Dublin on horse-back to attend a secret rebel meeting. They were met on the road by an officer accompanied by one of his yeomen on horse-back. Lord Edward was wearing a green scarf which offended the officer. He ordered Lord Edward to take it off. Lord Edward said to him "If the colour offends you sir perhaps you will have the courage to remove it as I will not". The officer spurred his horse and drew his sword. Lord Edward also drew his sword and knocked the other one out of the officers hand. While his companion kept back the yeoman, Lord Edward made the officer dismount from his horse.
