    There is an ancient tree known by that name. It is situated on the roadside between Ballinlough Crossroads and the Gate Lodge. It is believed in Cromwell's time priests were hung on the tree. The local people fear to pass it at night (Mrs Leavy Kilrush - 50 s)

    An ointment for "Scabs" used be made from daisy-roots; another ointment for yellow jaundice was made from primroses. ( Fuair Liam Ó Miodhcháin, (12) an píosa seo ó n-a aíntín Mrs Bennett, Kilrush -70-)

    Tratnín = blade of grass
    Caoining = "keening" of dog
    "Gamalook" = foolish person.
    Greesha (gríosach) = glowing ashes of fire
    Bogán = a soft egg
    Féar gorta = sudden hunger
    Driomman Dubh = an easy going fellow
    Cludóg = eggs given to boys as a present at Easter
    Ciarán (caorán?) sod of turf
    I'll throw a ~"nibbling" at you = small stone

    Gabbín - foolish person
    Meilín - cover for cut finger
    Scraws (scráith) - grassy sods.
    Pucán - he goat
    "Rib" of hair
    Práiscín (apron)
    Druman = strap across horse's back in ploughing
    "Cipín" - little stick
    Dudóg (slap or blow on ear)
    "Shaneen" smallest bird in cluth of turkeys
    "Varaban" - buttercup
    Scollps = straw for thatching ( lá na scolb).
