Oldbridge, Drogheda - Churns
The churns used in olden times were shaped like a barrel but wider at the top. They were worked by a handle at the side of the churn, and this handle was attached to the dash and worked it up and down.
There was another churn with two narrow planks stuck in the floor and connected with the ceiling. There was a handle attached to these planks which worked the dash exactly like a pump.
Then there were the ordinary dash churns which some people still use.Teresa Doonan (Scoláire)Got from Nicholas Doonan (aged 42)
