- The Famine TimesThe year before the famine potatoes were very plentiful. They were dug up and thrown into ditches. The very next year the blight came on them and they decayed in the ground. Hardly any of them were saved.
During the famine it was not unusual to see people rooting in the fields hoping to find even a piece of decayed turnip. They were glad to walk miles for some Indian meal to make porridge. Numbers of people died from starvation and from a terrible plague called cholera which came after the famine. Gerard Victory (Scolaire)
