  1. In the year 1911, a French vessel named the "Leon" carrying a cargo of corn was wrecked off the Quilty coast during a terrific storm. It blew a terrible storm all day and towards evening this ship was driven in and struck the rocks. The Quilty people sighted the ship and towards evening three brave fishermen volunteered to go out in their frail canoe. Owing to the wickedness of the storm they were driven back. Father Considine a good priest of the Mullagh parish was on the coast with the Quilty people praying for the rescue of the people on board.
He again encouraged the fishermen to put out their canoe and this time they succeeded in reaching the ship although the seas were mountains high. They rescued the captain and his wife and crew who were almost exhausted with the cold at that time. When they were taken safely ashore the Quilty people took them into their little homes and gave them dry clothes and warm blankets and food. The rescued people felt so grateful to the Quilty people that they wanted to do something for them in return so they decided to build a church in honour of Our Lady. When the new church was completed it was called the star of the sea.
