  1. John Shea of Grantstown was coming home one night from Fogartys of Ballyhurst where he had been playing cards. It was in the month of November and the night was very dark.
He came by a short cut through Nugent's fields. When he was about half way home he was met by his two dogs and almost immediately he heard an unearthly shriek. The dogs began to run round him in circles as if defending him from some evil unseen, and continued to do so, until he reached home. He was very frightened and when he reached his house he went to bed without lighting any lamp or candle.
When he got up in the morning and opened the door he found his two dogs dead on the doorstep and their bodies all covered with wounds.
