    independant for food upon the potatoe crop. The result of the potatoe crop was starvation among the people. As the populatin was almost double what it is now, more than eight and a half million, the disaster in a thickly populated country was fearful. About one million people are estimated to have died of hunger, or of disease, in the famine years and about another million are supposed to have emigrated from Ireland to the United States, Canada, Scotland, England, to escape death from hunger at home.
