  1. The Potatoes are planted in this district after St. Patrick's Day. The ground is first ploughed and harrowed. The drills are made with a plough and are about two feet apart. Farmyard manure is spread along each drill.
The woman of the house cuts the sgrolláns and puts them in bags. They are taken out to the fields. The planters take them in wicker baskets or Sgiachs and place them about a foot apart in the drills. Lime is shaken over them to keep away slugs. The drills are closed by ploughing.
When the stalks have grown to about four inches in height earth is raised to them with the plough.
During June and July the crop is sprayed to prevent attack from blight.
