  1. The landlord of Kanturk town and a great portion of the district was the Earl of Egmont. He never lived in the town.
    Whenever he came he stayed at the local hotel known as the "Egmont Arms Hotel". He sometimes entertained his friends in a Ballroom attached to the hotel. He was looked upon as a very good landlord and during his lifetime he gave a good deal of employment to local tradesmen and labourers.
    After the death of the Earl the estate was sold out to the people and all his former tenants became the owners of their own houses and lands.
    The Earl of Egmont never asked the people to pay tithes. The family name was Percival. There are
