- The houses occupied by our fore-fathers were made of clay. They had very low doors, sometimes only sacks were used for the purpose. The windows were only large holes left in the building. For a chimney they had an old box, plastered around with mud. Glass was not known at that time.
Later on, the people improved a good deal in their manner of house building and made walls of stone and mortar with a straw covering nicely thatched. They had glass windows and good doors. The floors in the kitchens were sometimes paved and sleeping rooms had timber floors. There was a half door outside the front door which was kept closed all day in order to keep fowl and animals from entering the house, but the top portion permitted a good light and plenty of air and sun into the house.
