- There is a certain bog in the townland of Lis-na-Brinna, in the parish of Rossmore, commonly known as the "Murder Bog". It is a huge extent of bog, which covers an area of over fifty acres. It has many quag-mires and is very dangerous to travellers.
Tradition tells us that the son of Randal O Hurley was being pursued by the English, and in this bog he sought refuge from his foes. One day a party of six soldiers raided the bog, having gained information from a spy. They met O Hurley and, not recognising him, asked him had he any tidings of their quarry. He said he had, and would lead them to his hiding place. He led them through a large quag-mire, but the soldiers knew not what it was. There were stepping stones going across the quagmire, and so on these O Hurley walked. The soldiers being suspicious of him walked three on either side. About half-way across they began to sink and cried aloud for help, but all in vain. O Hurley seeing their helplessness shot the six and since then it is called the "Murder Bog".- Informant
