  2. The "Manchester Merchant" was wrecked in Dingle Bay on the 17th January 1902.
It left America with a cargo of cotton and steered its course for Liverpool.
Strong winds and storms drove her off her course and she drifted on to Dingle Bay and grounded at the entrance to the bay here.
The people of Cromane saw the burning ship quiet plainly in the early hours of the morning.
The crew were saved as help came to them from Dingle.
The cotton was not burned as they scuttled the ship and she sank before the fire reached it.
The following Summer an Insurance Company in England sent divers to salvage the cotton.
They continued for three or four Summers until they succeeded in salvaging most of the cotton.
